Overview
Ancient baobabs, and the biggest elephant herds in Tanzania.
Tarangire is the northern circuit's quiet giant. Most visitors give it a rushed half-day on the way to the crater, which is exactly why we give it two nights. The park follows the Tarangire River through rolling country studded with baobabs, some of them older than any building in East Africa.
In the dry season that river becomes the only reliable water for miles, and the concentration it creates is extraordinary: herds of three and four hundred elephants, plus zebra, eland, oryx and the fringe-eared species you rarely see further north. Lion and leopard follow, and Tarangire's tree-climbing lions are a genuine local quirk.
It is also one of the best birding parks in Tanzania, with well over 500 recorded species, and one of the few northern parks where you can legally take a walking safari or a night drive in the adjoining conservancies.

TIMING CHANGES EVERYTHING
June to October is Tarangire at its most dramatic, when the river pulls everything in and elephant numbers peak. November to May scatters the game across a much greener park but delivers superb birding, migrant species and near-empty roads. The park is closest to Arusha, so it works well as either your first or last stop.
