Most people on a Zanzibar holiday assume the mainland is out of reach. It is not. Two flights and one very well-planned road day put you among Tarangire's elephant herds and then on the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater, back on the island before the week is out.
The trick is in the sequencing. We fly you across in the morning so the first afternoon is spent under baobabs in golden light rather than in transit, then overnight at a luxury lodge in the highlands above Karatu so the crater descent happens at dawn, before the day vehicles arrive.
It is short, and we make no pretence otherwise, but nothing about it feels rushed while you are in it. For travellers with a fixed island itinerary and a stubborn urge to see the mainland, this is the cleanest way to do it.

HOW THE JOURNEY UNFOLDS

Zanzibar to Tarangire
Morning flight from Zanzibar to Arusha, where your guide meets you at the airstrip. Transfer south-west to Tarangire National Park for an afternoon game drive among the elephant herds and ancient baobabs along the river, then continue up to a luxury lodge near Karatu for the night.
- 02
Ngorongoro Crater and fly back
An early descent into the Ngorongoro Crater for a concentrated Big Five game drive on the caldera floor, with a picnic lunch beside the water. Ascend in the afternoon and transfer back to Arusha for your return flight to Zanzibar.
