Calving Season Safari in Ndutu safari route in Tanzania

Calving Season Safari in Ndutu

New life on the southern plains.

Overview

Four days in Ndutu when half a million wildebeest are being born at once.

For a few weeks each year the short-grass plains around Ndutu become the busiest maternity ward on earth. Something in the order of eight thousand wildebeest calves are born each day, and every predator in the ecosystem knows it.

This itinerary does not spread itself thin. You go to Ndutu, and you stay there. A full day among the herds with a guide who can read which cow is about to drop and which cheetah has been shadowing the edge of the group since dawn.

It is the most emotionally loaded safari we run. Birth and predation happen within metres of each other, sometimes within minutes, and nobody comes back from it describing the plains the same way they did on arrival.
